She was in pain and having a difficult time walking. However, when she walked in to my office a few minutes before that, she was bent over about 75 degrees and had to have help walking. She could not take a step by herself.
In about 10 minutes, her posture improved by 45 degrees and her pain level decreased significantly. It is nothing I did, really. It is just the amazing ability of the body to heal and self-correct WHEN GIVEN THE PROPER HELP!!! As a chiropractor, I specialize in giving the body such help. Chiropractors provide gentle adjustments (high velocity, low amplitude, i.e. quick and soft maneuvers) to the spine in order to decrease pain and swelling and increase posture and function. We also use exercise and other forms of treatment to help us bring about desired results.
This sweet, little lady had the choice: lie around and hope for the best, or come to a chiropractor who she knew and trusted (b/c we had helped her with another problem six years ago) and get relief and help. The patient shook her head "YES" when you asked if she understood everything and if she was ready to "get going" with your well-thought-out plan of care.

The first adjustment went great. She got off the table and commented on how she felt better, had more ROM in her neck, and that her muscles weren't as tight. You leave the adjusting room excited that you have just helped a person feel and function better, knowing that she is your latest Chiro Disciple. You go home that night with visions of your phone ringing off the hook tomorrow with all then new patients that she is going to send.

Two days later, she misses her appointment....and you never see her again.

Sound familiar? Too familiar, perhaps? It doesn't have to be. How? Simple. Treat every patient like you would treat your mama. Don't try to "sell" them on what you think that they need. Simply tell them what you know they need. If your confidence and personal conviction come out as strong as they would if you were explaining the necessary POC to your mom (whose not gonna pay you, but you want to be well nonetheless), then your patient's will follow the outlined plan that you have for them. And guess what? The vast majority of them will get better...and refer you millions of patients.

Joy of being well

The other day, a lady came into my office and thanked me for helping her lower back so much that she was "finally able to get back down on [her] knees and pray to the LORD." Wow! Probably the neatest compliment that I've ever received. Certain MD's in our country and community have taken the oft-quoted by chiropractors, Edison-attributed quote "The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will instruct his patient in the care of the human frame, in diet and in the cause and prevention of disease" and ran with it, leaving us in the dust. While the majority of chiropractors (myself included) have been so concerned with staking our claim to helping lower back pain, neck pain, and headaches, some in the medical profession have usurped our claim to "natural health care" and are the ones leading the pack in recommendations on healthy diet, exercise, posture, etc. This must not be! We must let society know that we are the ones to turn to during this 'wellness revolution,' during this shift in consciousness back to less pharmaceutical living. Do your part. One that I actually do not know the answer to. I should since I am the District Director for Spartanburg, Cherokee, and Union counties of the South Carolina Chiropractic Association, but there are so many that it's hard to keep up w/ the count. Considering this, shouldn't the Upstate of SC have one of the healthiest populations in the state? I would say that this is most likely true. We understand that it is vitally important to take proper care of our bodies. Just as we go the dentist on a regular basis to make sure our teeth are in good health, a lot of people realize that the same principle applies to their spines. Maybe even more so since you can get new teeth, but you can't get a new spine. Be smart about your health. Have your spine checked for misalignments that can lead to pain, restriction, spasms, and a myriad of other issues. http://iveyosullivan.com/index.php

"No Crack" Chiropractic

I, of course, am referring to the noise sometimes made when we adjust someone's spine manually when writing the word "crack." So many people are afraid of visiting a chiropractor b/c they don't want their neck or back "cracked." Confession: neither do I. However, I love having my spine PROPERLY ADJUSTED BY A TRAINED PROFESSIONAL. If, during that adjustment, I hear an audible "pop" or "crack," no big deal to me. I realized that it is a big deal to others, and that is why we don't have to use that technique to get results. We often use one of two adjusting instruments, either an Activator or an Arthrostim, to perform spinal alignments instead of the traditional manual adjusting that usually results in the noise mentioned above. Check our http://iveyosullivan.com for more details on how I could possibly help you.

Chiropractic Care 450% more effective than medication

Spine medical journal posted an article in a 2003 edition (Spine 2003; 28: 1490-1503) that stated follow up on patients with back pain and dysfunction showed that the patients who received only chiropractic v.s. those who received only medicine had a 450% increase in the "fully-recovered" group. Simply put....we take care of our teeth b/c they are with us for life, but how many of us take care of the ONLY spine that we will ever have? I'll tell you how many....about 5-7% of the population. Isn't that crazy?! The part of your body that covers your spinal cord and spinal nerves, that is responsible for you being able to stand up, walk, sit, etc and only 5-7% of the population thinks it's important enough to visit a Chiropractor! Amazing! Be smarter than 95% of the US. Visit a chiropractor for spinal maintenance care just as you regularly visit your dentist for care of your teeth.

3 Easy Steps to a Healthier You!

Exercise...Do it.
Nutrition-Proper, nutrition that is
Good Posture.
Check this out for more info...http://www.facebook.com/#!/iveyosullivanchiropractic

Health Do-Over?

Everybody understands the concept of a "do-over." Remember when you were little and playing ball. Something would happen, like a dog would run through the field and mess up the play, and everyone would yell "Do-over!" That meant that it was as if the play had never been played and you were starting from scratch.

To an extent, you can get a health "do-over" if you start before it's too late. But what does this mean? Well, it's different for different people. Yet, taking care of your fitness, eating habits, posture and frame are great places to start.

Chiropractors are trained to help maximize the productivity of your body through improving function, decreasing pain, and assisting in lifestyle changes to help get you back to health naturally. Before both feet are in the grave, get to your local chiropractor today! http://www.iveyosullivan.com

FOOTBALL!!!

Just heard my first ESPN promo for NFL football and it's got me pumped. Then I got to chiropractic college and I learned how the study of physics has absolutely everything to do with the spine. We are physical creations (as well as spiritual, emotional, but today we only speak of the physical make-up). Things like posture and body habitus greatly effect our spinal health. Too much belly out front = pain in the back. Head translating too forward out over your shoulders = neck and midback pain. Chiro care, weight maintenance, and regular posture stretch, strengthening exercises is crucial to how good you feel and function. http://iveyosullivan.com/custom_content/c_155966_weight_loss.html

Barefoot Running?

Not for me, nor do I recommend or endorse it, but if you are considering it, check this out first

Barefoot Running
Until recently, most of us considered athletic shoes an important and essential part of our athletic training gear. Every year since the mid-1970s, the big running shoe companies have introduced new product lines based on shoes with increased cushion and support. Today, however, there has been an uprising among subgroups of runners, cross-fitness enthusiasts and weight lifters: Less shoe is better, and no shoe is best.

The premise behind barefoot running is essentially that the intrinsic muscles, joints, ligaments and mechanoreceptors of the feet require stimulation to function properly. And this optimal function is inhibited by highly supportive and cushioned shoes.

If you’re interested in trying out barefoot running, consider this advice before you begin.

Start with walking barefoot or in minimalist shoes, and gradually work into running.
Progress to short runs. Begin running only five minutes per run, and gradually increase.
Rather than going totally barefoot, use a minimalist shoe to protect your feet from thorns, glass, nails, stones and other debris.
Stop barefoot running at the earliest sign of pain.
Avoid running barefoot in freezing temperatures. Shoes protect us from frostbite if nothing else.
Be prepared for blisters and calluses to form as you transition to barefoot running

Runners! It pains me to have people in Spartanburg South Carolina suffer from neck pain and/or arm numbness and tingling. Often times, folks enter our office after having been thoroughly examined and treated by their GP in regards to these conditions without much success. Sometimes the drugs and surgery help, but sometimes they do not. If not, then Chiropractic care is often recommended. We look for areas of joint restriction and/or muscle tension that is creating irritation to the nerves in the neck that create the neck pain and symptoms in the arm. Usually, we can get a resolution in the symptoms within a reasonable time period. Give us a try. It could be time to purchase a new mattress or pillow. The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) recommends finding a mattress that evenly supports your whole body. There should be no gaps between you and the mattress when you lie down. When choosing a pillow, select one that supports your head and neck in alignment with the rest of the spine, whether you sleep on your side or back. Keep in mind that what works for your partner may not work for you— there isn’t one mattress or pillow that fits everyone. Simple adjustments, such as adding foam padding, can help tremendously.

Re-evaluate your posture at work.

Americans spend an average of 44 hours at work every week— often behind a desk. To avoid poor posture that can lead to tension, back pain, and joint problems such as carpal tunnel syndrome, check that your chair is the right size and adjusted correctly, says the ACA. Do your feet rest comfortably on the ground? Does the chair offer lumbar support? Are you able to tilt or swivel easily while performing tasks at your desk? Also, be sure you have adequate light (so that you aren’t straining to see documents or a computer screen), adjust your computer monitor so that it is at eye level, and wear a headset for longer telephone conversations. And don’t forget to take frequent breaks and stretch throughout the day.

Learn how to lift correctly.

Many back injuries are caused by improper lifting of items such as luggage, backpacks or briefcases, storage boxes, or even groceries. But knowing how to lift properly can prevent serious injury. First and foremost, don’t bend from the waist. Keep your back straight, and squat to reach the item. Then, keep it close to your body as you lift, and avoid twisting motions. When traveling, check all bags that weigh more than 10 percent of your body weight.
http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif
Eat right and exercise well.

Eating a balanced diet and getting regular exercise helps your body stay toned and tension-free— and promotes a healthy weight and a happier spine. Smart exercise and a good diet can also prevent osteoporosis, which affects over 20 million American women. To start, the ACA recommends eating out at restaurants less (to reduce the amount of unhealthful fats and sugars you consume) and adding more fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to your diet. Aim for a minimum of 20 to 30 minutes of exercise, three or four days a week.
Tired of living with back or neck pain? Or, if you are in a profession where you have to spend a lot of time in a "flexed" posture (i.e. school teacher or mommy who has to look down at her small children all day), then you surely suffer with this problem as well. It hurts. It burns. It makes it difficult to breathe deeply. It may even create numbness and tingling or pain down either or both arms. Who needs that?! So, what do you to get rid of it? Visiting a Chiropractor is a great place to start. We have the training and expertise to make a determination if we can help you and what plan of action to take in doing so. As a friend of mine says, "One minute in pain is 60 seconds too long." Don't delay. Feel better today. What is causing the asthma epidemic and what can we do to stem the tide? A recent series of articles in the Journal of the American Chiropractic Association (JACA) delves into this question and offers advice from doctors of chiropractic and allergists who have helped control asthma symptoms in many patients. I remember her sharing w/ me one day about how her classes taught her that for ages, different cultures have recognized a person's "power house" or "seat of energy" to be the lower back. In dealing w/ numerous lower back cases through my nearly ten years of practice, I certainly have seen what they were referring to. Show me someone w/ a lack of energy, drive, gusto, spark, and get-up-and-go, and I can almost guarantee that he/she will have some achyness and/or flat-out pain in the lower back or pelvis.

At our office, we help people feel better and function on a daily basis. Did you know that if your feet are dropping their arches, that this structural problem creates stress points up your legs and into your lower back. Often, custom orthotics (not the store bought kind!) can be a great help to reduce and/or eliminate lower back pain. It would be so awesome if I didn't have it, but I do. However, at least I have it in a nice, warm home, and have the ability to get treated for it w/ the best and most effective pharmalogical intervention. I cant help but think: What if I had been keeping up w/ my spine maintenance adjustments? Would my body have had the capacity to fight off this stuff more effectively and would I have not gotten sick? But I thought it was Resolution?

Instead of having a New Year's Resolution, why not a New Year's Solution, a solution to your problem of not being able to follow through with your previous resolutions. Goals and/or resolutions are nothing more than pipe dreams unless we set up a plan to make them reality. It is imperative that you get a clearly defined picture of what you desire to accomplish, and then flesh it out with systematic steps and time-frames of action. Most important of all, make sure that you have a completion date that is set. Without that crucial piece of the pie, you will lack the drive to reach your outcome.
So whether your resolution is to lose a few pounds, get in shape, make more money, or GO SEE YOUR CHIROPRACTOR CONSISTENTLY TO MAINTAIN THE HEALTH OF THE ONLY SPINE YOU HAVE just make sure that you begin your journey with a solution to your resolution.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://iveyosullivan.blogspot.com/2010/01/new-years-solutions-but-i-thought-it.html' title='New Year's Solutions? First of all, walking. Just bundle up, and don't stay out an unreasonable amount of time to develop some kind of sickness. Use common sense, but get out and enjoy the fresh air. Walking is a great way to get aerobic exercise. It's low impact on your body, but gets the joints moving and the heart pumping.
Secondly, consider exercising along w/ an exercise DVD. If you follow the leader, you will get a workout. Just make sure that you are physically capable of doing the exercises on the DVD. Don't hurt yourself trying to get in shape.
Lastly, join a swim center. Swimming is one of the best exercises one can perform. Most swim centers also offer water aerobics, too. These are low impact exercises that really get your blood flowing.
Whatever you decided to do this fall and winter, just make sure that you make and stick to your plan to exercise. If not, the Holiday meals, snacks, and treats will add up quickly.

What if 5% of parachutes failed?

This is a question I used to ask in my patient "intro to Chiropractic" talks while attending Sherman Chiropractic College. "Just what if 5% of parachutes didn't open?" If you never intend on jumping from a plane, then maybe this doesn't matter to you, but if you are a paratrooper or a family member of a paratrooper, then this statistic makes all the difference in the world. What if your nervous system only worked 95% of the time? Would that be acceptable to you? Of course not, because you'd be dead if your nervous system didn't work 100% of the time. But what about this? If your nervous system is functioning at 100% (always) but is not functioning at 100% capactiy all of the time, could that make a drastic difference in your quality of life? If your ankles don't communicate to your brain where they are in space 100% of time, then don't you think that there may be a good chance that you'll trip and stumble a good bit? So how do you know if your nervous system is working properly? A good way to know is to visit your Chiropractor. Even if you are not feeling bad, your spine could be out of alignment just enough to negatively effect your nervous system and disallow 100% capacity function of your body. If I had a dollar for every one of my patients who said, "I didn't even know that spot in my back was sore until you touched it," then I wouldn't be driving a PT cruiser. The point is this: They don't know that there spine is out of place unless they are experiencing pain from it. Pain is the last indicator to show up in most cases, and the dysfunctioning nervous system is present due to misalignment way before the pain. So what's the moral of this story? To function at your peak level, visit a Chiropractor on a regular basis. If you live in Spartanburg SC, that would be me.

Sit up straight!

How many times have you heard that in your life? My shoulders are raised, the muscles contracting, even though I am not stressed. I'll only write for a few minutes, but what about those off you who sit at a computer all day? Do you realize how negatively your posture is being affected by the necessary ergonomics of computer work? So what do you do? Do this. If you have to work for hours at a time at a computer, set yourself a timer and get out of your chair once per hour for three minutes. During that break, walk, stand, squat, stretch your neck, shoulders, arms, legs and lower back. Roll your shoulders. Look up, down, left and right. Move. By taking these mini-breaks, you will be amazed at how much better you feel and how your productivity skyrockets.

China is thin.

Of course I am not referring to its economy or its traffic. I am referring to its people's physique. I may have seen four overweight people the entire 8 days that I visited Shanghai. Why is this? Obviously, the majority of the people there walked a great deal, for exercise and b/c their feet were a primary mode of transportation. Secondly, their diet seems to be very different than the typical American diet... not as many processed foods. I am sure that there is a third and/or fourth point to my observation but I haven't figured it out just yet. In any event, we could learn a lot from our friends in Asia...more fish, less junk food...more exercise. Duke and BC are tied w/ 1:23 left to play! What a game! This is a very difficult and stressful time of year for sports fans such as myself. Why? B/c if your team is not doing so well (like my Clemson Tigers) then there is a lot of anger and stress to deal with. And if you just like to watch good games, then you end up staying up too late and wathching waaaaayyyyy too much TV thereby inducing greater stress the next day in your life due to a lack of sleep. For instance, this current game and the Syracuse/UConn game from last night that went into 6 OT's and lasted until 1:30 a.m.
So what are my health care tips from this diatribe? Don't pull for Clemson (too much heart break) and don't care about who wins the other games so much that you stay up too late.
Or do both and have fun. Sure, genetics certainly play a role, but there is actually even research that says that we can change the way our genes function through proper thought and the way we take care of our bodies. So, Be healthy! Choose to be a healthy person and not a sick person. Make lifestyle choices that will allow you to be that 'model of health' that you desire to be. You can't say, "I'm healthy" and eat at McDonald's every meal everyday and actually be healthy. Use your brain and don't just follow your stomach. Do your exercise...even when you are tired. And for goodness sakes, go to your Chiropractor, preferably me, if you live in the Upstate of SC. This will insure that your body has the best chance to adapt to the negative stressors it faces everyday. How? Because when your spine is moving properly, your body functions properly. Be healthy!

Almonds, Walnuts, Dark Chocolate...MMMMM

Yes, almonds, walnuts, and dark chocolate! They make such a great mid-morning/mid-afternoon snack. Why? 1. Hugely antioxidant. This means that these foods give your body a great advantage at fighting off all of the poisons, etc. that attack it each day. 2. Protein. This is great b/c our cells are greatly comprised of protein molecules and it is imperative that we replenish protien in our bodies in a healthy manner for proper energy production and utilization. 3. These three ingredients taste great together and you don't need more than one to two handfuls to get you over the proverbial "hump" of pre-lunch and pre-dinner energy drops. Just go to the store and buy your own bulk amount of almonds, walnuts, and dark chocolate and mix. Store in snack sized ZipLock bags (one bag should last 2 days). Make sure that you have more nuts than chocolate, and if you are allergic to any nuts that could have been processed with the almonds and walnuts or ingredients in the chocolate, then use your brain and don't eat this snack!

Antioxidants

It is sooooooo imperative (a word I rarely every heard until 12th grade calculus class) that we make sure that we are getting antioxidant foods in our diets! Why? Because just walking outsided or just being inside exposes us to so many oxidative stressors that wear on our tissues, and if we don't eat antioxidant food to combat those free radicals in our environment, then we will certainly get sick, be sicker, die sooner. Doesn't sound like fun does it? So what is the best antioxidant- containing food? Acai berries are #1. Everyone acknowledges this. So, to start, buy and drink MonaVie on a regular basis (at least 4 oz/day). You can get it at wholesale prices at www.mymonavie.com/iveyosullivan. All you have to do is sign up to become a distributor for $39 and then you can order as much or little as you like for the cheapest prices. I recommend going ahead and doing an autoship of at least one case per month so you'll be sure to always have some in the fridge.

New Year's Delusions

Resolutions become delusions if we are not committed to following through with our commitments. Why make a promise to ourself if we know deep down that we will not keep that promsie? The movie Yes Man suggest that when we break covenants with ourselves that things can get a bit out-of-sorts with our lives. Of course, the movie adds a very comedic spin to this suggestion through some funny acting by Jim Carrey but the point is actually valid. Breaking promises to ourselves is the worst kind of promise-breaking. When we know that we are not following through on our goals, then we start feeling bad about ourselves. When this occurs, we not only don't do the things we committed to do at the first of the year, but that depression can carry over into other areas of our lives that we may not have been struggling with in the first place.
So what are we to do?
Follow through! We have the motivation to brush our teeth everyday (I hope!), so we can also have the motivation to form into habit whatever new thing we want to see happen in 2009. Don't let this year be a year of delusions, but of Resolutions becoming Realities.

Moderately Merry Christmas!

"Moderatey" applies to our eating habits, or how our eating habits should be, and not to "Merry Christmas!" We must mention this about eating properly and with restraint at this time of year because if not reminded, we may indulge a little too much and pay for it later. How could we pay for it? In the form of excess pounds, of course, but also in these following ways: increased pain, fatigue, insulin resistance, autoimmune disease predisposition. Do any of those things sound "merry?" Certainly not. For more information on how this can occure visit sites such as http://www.livinlavidalowcarb.com/blog and www.deflame.com.
So, this Holiday Season have the best time of your life. Not only should you make sure that you sit and stand w/ the best posture, but it is also vital that you visit your Chiropractor and allow him/her to help you maintain that posture through regular adjustments and supportive care. Standing or sitting for any amount of time and looking at your midsection will certainly not help you feel any better. However, if you do actually look after what you eat and make sure that you do not over do it this Holiday Season. I read a few years back about how most of us just put on 2 measly little pounds over each Holiday season, but the problem is that over 10 years that adds up to 20 lbs. So, watch your portion size. Eat sensibly. Continue your exercise. Don't believe me? Just go check out the State Farm corporate headquarters. These insurance companies will continue to raise premiums and co-pays/co-insurance and decrease reimbursement rates. This means that times will continue to get tougher for you and me as far as health care options are concerned. More out of pocket money is the new name of the game. I am supposed to be the epitome of health, never get sick. I preach to my patients the value and benefit of taking care of your spine, proper nutrition, proper sleep, proper exercise, proper supplementation so that you won't get sick (or so you'll get better faster when you do get sick), and now I'm sick. How did this happen? It probably has a lot to do w/ the fact that...unti today...I hadn't been adjusted in a couple of weeks; I've been running myself ragged and not sleeping enough for the past several weeks; I haven't been drinking my MonaVie; I haven't been taking any vitamins; and I have only been exercising sporadically over the past couple of weeks. Everything I tell people to do, I haven't done. I am around hundreds of people (translated "germs") each week in my practice, and my body succumbed. Limitation of time and matter. We can only work w/ what we've got. If we don't do what we need to do, our body gives in. Sure, this product has been around for ages and our grandparents grew up drinking tomato juice for their daily dose of vegetables, but today there are so many products out that are more specifically targeted to todays culture, so I suggest that you start drinking at least 4-6 oz of a superjuice each day. The fact is that your diet is not nearly as healthy as you would like it to be. Even if you are eating your daily recommended fruits and vegetables, you are not getting the nutrients that were once in those foods in order to get you the fiber and vitamins, etc, that one would have received when those charts were written. Drink MonaVie. Only 4 oz per day will get you the antioxidant equivalent of eating 13 servings of fruits and vegetables per day. 13! My internet

Sometimes my computer doesn't work properly. Sometimes it does. I like it better when it does work properly. Doesn't that sound just like your body? Sometimes it works properly and sometimes it doesn't...and we like it so much better when it does work properly. When it doesn't work, what do you do? You go to your Chiropractor, MD, or ignore it. I suggest that you don't ignore the problem b/c it is a warning sign that something is not right. Pain is like your "check oil" light coming on in your car. If you notice it, you could either just unplug the light. This would make the light not shine anymore. Or you could actually change the oil so the light doesn't come on anymore. Change the oil. Take care of you body. The past few days the commentators had mentioned how she had a little "hitch" in her stride. They said that they couldn't quite pinpoint what the problem was, and the runner even commented during her interview how she had no injuries and felt great and well prepared. Nonetheless, this year, she was running .4 sec behind her times from 07. So what is going on? Where's the "hitch in her giddyup" coming from? Based on my visual inspection of her gait on my HD TV, her hips are WAY out of balance. My guess is that if she went to a Chiropractor 15 times over a 5 week period that she would be back to running times comparable to last year...maybe even better. I could be wrong but what if I was right? Statistics say that 80% of Olympic athletes are under care. It seems to me that Ms. Felix may be in that unfortunate 20% not experiencing the benefits of regular Chiropractic treatment can improve athletic performance. Ms. Felix, if you're out there, consider Chiropractic. You're a fantastic runner, and your bio on NBC certainly painted you as an even more fantastic person. You made us all proud to be Americans with your Silver Medal performance. Don't cry. You were the 2nd fastest woman in the world tonight!!! She has done this for years and attributes her longevity to the fact the she has refused to take a bunch of medicines, eaten healthy, exercised, and kept regular Chiropractic visits a part of her life. This lady gets the big idea. This idea being that the body functions best when all of the joints closest to the exiting nerve roots which supply the organs of the body are functioning as close to full capacity as possible. Only Chiropractors are trained to detect if this is happening (i.e. are the joints moving properly? is there swelling in the area? are the muscles too tight or too lax?) and to correct it when it is not. Sure, Chiropractic is indicated for certain problems that arise in the musculoskeletal system (particularly the spine), but it is also a great idea to visit a Chiropractor for your weekly 'ounce of prevention'. Everyone knows it is worth more than a 'pound of cure.' Visit www.iveyosullivan.com for more information on how Chiropractic could help you.

Experiencing back pain? You don't have to.

Well, maybe I should say, "You may not have to," b/c I certainly don't know your situation or what's going on with your back. However, there are a few options to help lower back pain that you may not be familiar with. First of all, Chiropractic. It is safe and effective. So much so that it is one of the fastest growing professions in the country. Thousands of people flock to Chiropractors each year, from star athletes like Tiger Woods to media moguls like Sean "P. Diddy" Combs. If you haven't tried Chiropractic yet, consider it. Don't believe the mumbo jumbo you've heard in the past uttered from folks ignorant about this profession. Try it for yourself and experience the results. Ask your neighbors, family, and friends who they go to and trust. Certainly they wouldn't steer you in the wrong direction. My second recommendation would be to try a lumbar decompression table like the Accu-Spina. These tables are the latest and greatest treatment option for conservative lower back pain treatment. They are also indicated for people with disc issues, sciatica, and degenerative arthritis. Visit my website www.iveyosullivan.com and click on Accu-Spina for more information on this cutting-edge technology that is devoid of any "cutting edge."

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://iveyosullivan.blogspot.com/2008/07/experiencing-back-pain-you-dont-have-to.html' title='Experiencing back pain? If not, this is for someone you know who is pregnant...which may be you one day...if you're a girl.
Pregnancy is certainly the time of life to take ultimate care of yourself. Now you are not just eating for yourself, but for your baby. Now you are not just exercising for yourself, but also for your child. Now you are not just sleeping for yourself, but also for your little one in the oven. All the vices that you had before you were "with child," it is now time to abandon. Vitamins didn't matter to you before? Now they should be as vital as the air you breathe. Chiropractic adjustments are also great for pregnant ladies, not just because most have back pain. Visiting a Chiropractor for maintenance adjustments even if you don't have any pain, can help you have a more functional pregnancy and an easier delivery. That is not just subjective data. Look in JMPT for the research articles on length of delivery for those under Chiropractic care during pregnancy and for those not. Of course, seek out a Chiropractor experienced in working with pregnant ladies. Have fun being pregnant. Sleeping on your stomach creates a decreased curvature of your cervical spine (neck). This leads to tension and nerve irritation. Sleeping on an improper pillow (i.e. too soft, too firm, too fat, or too skinny) can kink up your neck and cause the same thing to occur as when sleeping on your stomach. Also, if you sleep in an inclined position w/ 2 or more pillows, this will not only affect your neck, but also your upper back as well. Be sure that your sleep is not harming you. Visit my office site www.iveyosullivan.com and look for the ChiroFlow pillow explanation under the products tab. This is the pillow I and wife personally use b/c you can customize it to fit your neck. I've had mine for 8 years and love it. The only thing that I'm not totally sure about is whether the "contact us," "email the doctor," and "request and appt." emails are properly working. However, the site looks great and it has tons of pertinent information about our practice, chiropractic, natural health care and wellness. We also have a section called "supportive products" that has certain products that we sell to help ease pain and aid in spinal problem correction such as customizeable water pillows (awesome...I've had mine for 8 years now!) to MonaVie juice (highest antioxidant content of any fruit know so far) and microwaveable/freezeable hot/cold packs (keep 'em in the freezer or microwave them if you need moist heat). Check it out today and let this be your new source for health care information.

On the Web...better

We have had a web presence for a few years now, but out old website is seriously out of date. How many times have these 4 words echoed through our minds as we felt something quite unpleasant in our lower backs? Probably too many to mention. Just today, I was lifting a box of carpet squares off the floor and felt that all too familiar strain in my lower back...the strain that I know better than to ever feel. I am a Chiropractor. I realize the importance of lifting w/ my legs, but, as is often the case, I was in a hurry and did not use proper form. Thankfully, nothing bad happened, but it certainly could. Best case scenario, you slightly strain or pull a muscle. Worst case scenario, you rupture a disc. An in-between scenario, and the one I normally see in my office is a subluxation of the lumbar or pelvic spine accompanied by disc symptoms and muscle strain. A subluxation is when a bone moves slightly out of place, just enough to disrupt normal function of the nerves and surrounding tissues. This can often cause pain, but sometimes not for a while. Our bodies are tough. They can handle a lot of difficulty. However, eventually, disturbed tissue will let us know it is disturbed. The moral of this story is this: Think before you lift. Use proper form. Get some help; you don't have to be Hercules. And, get your spine checked by a Chiropractor. We can tell if you're spine is aligned or not. Think of us as "The Dentists for your Spine." Get checked out periodically, to hopefully prevent big problems in the future.

So the deal is...

That we have got to move. So many people I see in my office complain of how stiff and sore they are and a lot of it is b/c they haven't moved...really moved...in years. Sure, this lack of motion in general leads to lack of motion in the spine which causes them to have reason to come in and see me. However, so many of these condition I see each week could have been avoided if the patient would have been undertaking a regular exercise routine. Certainly, we can become subluxated by sleeping funny, stress, or numerous other causes, so just exercising certainly doesn't make us immune to not having spine problems, but regular movement on a consistent basis makes such a difference. Walk. Stretch. Shrug your shoulders. Wave your arms. Do some yardwork. Just move.

Antioxidant Power

Four ounces of Monavie juice has the antioxidant power of 13 servings of fruits and vegetables! What is this? It is a relatively new highly antioxidant rich nutrition supplement that is flying off the shelves of health care offices, day-spas, dermatologists offices, and beauty salons b/c of its potency and performance. This pleasant tasting juice (think grape, blackberry, fruit punch) contains 18 different fruits with its primary ingredient the Acai berry from Brazil. This berry has gained fame from Dr. Perricone, Oprah, The Today Show, and a University of Florida study that showed it killed luekemia cells in the lab. Quite impressive! The main function with this supplement (as with all fruits and most vegetables) is to decrease inflammatory processes in the body thereby improving health. Most current research proves that free-radicals and inflammation processes are the two main causes for disease and aging. Taking a supplement to help decrease both of these is key to health maintenance, healing, and longevity. Check it out at www.Monavie.com.

Cold, Cold, and more Cold!

Winter finally feels like winter here in Sunny South Carolina. Just last week we had one half day of snow. It covere teh ground for about 20 hours and was gone as quickly as it came. I say this with much joy b/c it was beautiful to see falling to the ground. It was more beautiful that it did not stick to the roads and mess up my entire business week.
I realize that we are fortunate to have the opportunity to experience season changes here in SC, but I must say that the SnowBirds of south Florida may have it all figured out. Seeing as how it is regularly about 75 degrees down there this time of year, they do not have to worry if the cold weather outside is going to affect their arthritis. They rarely have to be concerned with the fact that their car may not start b/c it is frozen over. Then in the summer, when it is 1000 degrees in south Florida, they "migrate" back up to where it is only 75 degrees from June -September. Yes, they certainly have it all figured out. I've got it figured out, too, but I don't have the $ to participate.

NEW YEAR, NEW YOU, NEW ME, NEW NEW

I ran out of things that made sense or rhymed in my title. Oh well. Everyone makes resolutions this time of year b/c they want to change for the better. The heart of the question is: Do you really want to be better or do you just think that you do? To have a "New You," you must be a "New You." You must decide today that the resolutions you write on paper will not just be for the month of January or the year 2008, but they must be a part of your life for the rest of your life. To quote several motivational speakers: Change the Picture, Change the Person. See yourself as truly different and you will be. As for me? I am resolving to give up exercise. That's my resolution.

Merry Christmas to all my People!!!

All this year I have been touting the benefits of eating healthy and exercising. Over the past few days, I have done neither. Some of my favorite books growing up were the Berenstein Bears. The moral of each book was always "Do as I say, not necessarily as I do." I certainly have felt like Papa Berenstein over this Holiday, but, what can I say? The chocolate and candy sure has been good! Tomorrow it is back to work and back to a normal diet...maybe....I still have about one year's worth of candy on my counter downstairs.

On another note, my Sunday School class found it amazing that I have a blog. Why was that? Do I have a problem linking words together to make sentences on a regular basis? Do I look computer illiterate? Do I appear to have no mind for the formation of paragraphs? Just something I wonder about.

Super Foods

Eating raw organic fruits and vegetables that are high in antioxidant value is the most beneficial for our health. Is it always the most delicious? NO. Do I always (or ever) eat such a diet? Not usually. However, the more we strive for such a diet, the better off we will be in the long and short run. Yoda says that there is no try only do and do not (or something like that). Let's be sure that we are "doing" the right thing with our diets.

FOODY GOODY

A small town in SC used to have a Chinese restaurant named " Foody Goody." I would pass by this store on my way back to Clemson University when a college student. Such a funny name. I never ate there, so I don't know if the owners were not very good with the English language (Not that I am any better) or if they were just racist white people. In any event, a little Chinese food goes a long way. Egg rolls are the best! Not so good for your body, but great for the palate.
